Part of beauty is having beautiful glowing skin...and not just in a superficial way.

Skin health is so much more than choosing natural makeup or sustainable companies. The way our skin looks and feels has a lot to do with what we drink and eat. Having a balanced diet is essential to having overall health and our outward appearance.

To understand how what we put into out bodies effects the look of our skin, let's look into our how skin works.

Our skin is comprised of 3 layers:

  • Epidermis:
    1. Stratum Corneum: The outermost layer, composed of dead, flattened skin cells that are continuously shed and replaced.
    2. Stratum Lucidum: A thin, clear layer found only in thick skin areas like the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
    3. Stratum Granulosum: This layer contains granules that help form a waterproof barrier, preventing fluid loss from the body.
    4. Stratum Spinosum: Known as the "spiny layer," it provides strength and flexibility to the skin through desmosomes, which hold cells together.
    5. Stratum Basale (or Stratum Germinativum): The deepest layer, where new skin cells are produced through continuous cell division (mitosis).

These layers contribute to the protection, repair, and functionality of the skin.

  • Dermis:

The dermis is thicker than the epidermis and contains a variety of structures that are vital for skin function:

    1. Blood vessels: Provide nutrients and oxygen to the skin, and help regulate temperature.
    2. Nerve endings: Allow sensation of touch, pain, temperature, and pressure.
    3. Sweat glands: Produce sweat to regulate body temperature.
    4. Sebaceous (oil) glands: Secrete oil (sebum) to lubricate and protect the skin.
    5. Hair follicles: The roots of hairs grow in the dermis.
    6. Collagen and elastin fibers: Provide strength, elasticity, and flexibility to the skin.
  • Hypodermis:
The subcutaneous tissue which consists primarily of fat and   connective tissue. This layer insulates the body.

Next, let's discuss how what we consume generates our skin. If we look at the functions of the different parts of the skin organ, we will know that it uses what we eat and drink to create new cells. This is called the process of keratinization.

Keratinization is the process in which new cells are pushed up into the surface of the skin and eventually fall off. Hence why exfoliation is important.
